Indigo Smoke. Yes, that's what it's called. And, for those who have not yet trekked to the lower end of Bloomfield Avenue in the Township of Montclair, I urge you to run don't walk to this marvelous treasure.
Indigo Smoke offers a variety of mouth-watering food, including soul food. How do I rate the cuisine? In a word, delicious! But above and beyond the menu, the restaurant offers smooth jazz in the persons of gifted vocalists and musicians. I love it!
Truth be told, I accidentally ran up on this establishment while looking for another place to dine. I have not be disappointed. They are open 7-days a week and the Sunday brunch brings in not only the church crowd only, but also those who just want to relax and enjoy in an ambience that's conducive to a good time.
A number of members of my church and I have made a beeline to the hip place after our morning church service. My family and I have done the same.
I would describe it as an upscale eatery with a wait staff that is courteous and attentive. No, the folks at Indigo Smoke didn't ask me to write this column.
Even though I'm happy to see the folks there carry our publication, "The Positive Community," I never go into any place as a journalist, unless I'm working on a specific story.
When I was a newspaper reporter for The Herald News, I covered the Montclair community. It's a wonderful town with a diverse population that would qualify as part of David Dinkins' gorgeous mosaic.
I had the pleasure of attending a dynamite affair at the home of the late Aubrey Lewis years ago. Lewis supported Dinkins' first run for New York mayor and the event was second to none. Lewis appeared to spare no expense for this campaign event.
Then again, Montclair and many of its residents, churches and restaurants have always had a pleasant effect on me. By the by, as gossip columnists Cindy Adams and Lizz Smith would say, The Positive Community is in Montclair. As you can see, I like the community.
That's why I was delighted when I learned there was a place to go on Sundays to unwind not-too-far from our own church. It's a beautiful thing.
For those who may read this column and wonder why I didn't write about the Katrina travesty, here's the reason. Unfortunately, we in the Black community, will have to look at this debacle for many years to come. Therefore, I figured I'd squeeze something pleasant to read while we watch our "brothers" and "sisters" in the gulf coast continue to wonder: IS This America?
Jesus said the poor you shall have always. I say problems caused by humanity we will have always. Let's just take a break and turn our eyes onto those things that make us smile.
Indigo Smoke is one such thing. Bravo!
