What Is This Thing Called Love?
By Rosemary Sinclair

Rosemary Sinclair Many of us use the word “love” indiscriminately and erroneously. We say we love ice cream or pizza. We say we love a parade or football, baseball or soccer. We say someone is the love of our life. But we don’t realize that most of us are incapable of loving in the biblical sense. We express love the way it is represented by Hollywood , loving others because of their physical attractiveness, because they “turn me on.” We equate love only with romantic feelings, when something or someone gives us good feelings.

But love as exemplified by Christ is nto an emotion, but a way of treating others. “Love is patient and kind.,” the bible says. (1 Cor:13.4). Christ tells us to love the unlovable, our enemies, even those who have hurt or wronged us.

Though this seems so difficult, we can love as Christ loved, and reap wonderful rewards. For years, I was consumed by hatred for by ex-husband and “the other woman” who became his new wife. It was hatred so intense that it crippled me emotionally. I thought of nothing but revenge. At 17 I was becoming a bitter old woman.

Then I accepted Christ and realized that my bitterness could have an adverse on my young children. I knew that they need to respect their father and stepmother and enjoy spending time with them. I asked God to take away my hatred and replace it with forgiveness.

God heard my prayer and replaced the ugly feelings with goodwill and compassion. I was able to rejoice with my ex-husband and his wife when their children were born, and with all their achievements through the years.

My children’s stepmother and I developed a mutual respect. I was truly happy for the advantages she enjoys. She invited me to her home. Although I have no intention of accepting the invitation, I am grateful for the goodwill God has created.

And so once again, God has proved to me the wisdom of His word. Good results are guaranteed when one studies and follows God’s biblical directives. The benefits I have reaped have enabled me to be truly loving to the people around me and to finally see myself as a worthwhile person rather than a bitter old woman.

Love is patient
  And is kind

Love transforms a hateful mind
Love brings joy into each day

Love helps the lost to find their way
  God is love
