Prolific rapper Kanye West said, "President Bush doesn't like Black people."
Perhaps brotherman has an inside track or the 4-1-1 on something we, the public, don't know. Truth be told, I don't know whether Bush likes Black people or not. I do know this, however: somebody's gotta answer for this travesty in Louisiana.
Somebody's got to give an account of what went wrong and how, in the richest country in the world, do we have a sea of dead humanity floating down the thoroughfares of New Orleans.
This is neither Calcutta nor Ethiopia. This is the United States of America. Somebody ought to "pull the coats" of some of these unknowledgable journalists who have insisted upon calling the Katrina hurricane victims "refugees."
Where do these Kens and Barbies get off? The temerity of these uninformed and insenstive telepromter readers.
My late father was born in Louisiana and raised in Houston, TX. I have relatives who lived in New Orleans and like everyone else, they lost everything.
Fortunately, they were able to escape because they had transportation. That, hopefully, will put to rest the nonsense many of the right-wing talk-show hosts are spewing. In other words, the supporters of this administration have circled the wagons and are once again blaming victims for circumstances beyond their control.
I'm not a whining Black "sista" who sees racism in every nook and cranny. I am, thank you very much, a Black woman, however, who sees things for what they are and not for what I want them to be.
And what I want is for this nation to expend the same kinds of monies on rehabilitating the Gulf Coast as it has spent and continues to spend in Iraq.
After all, the country could not do anything less and still call itself a humane and just society. The world is watching us, and what it sees is anything but justice and fair play.
Babies and young children have been separated from their parents. Who's gonna address that? The rumors continue to run rampant that slimy developers have already begun to scope out building sites in New Orleans for future projects. Indigent people will be unable to buy property in what for many is the land of their birth. It's Harlem USA all over again.
Who's gonna address that? This is not, repeat, not a one-day, or one-week, or a one-month story. This saga must be kept in the news on or near the front pages of major publications because we owe it to our "brothers" and "sisters" who cannot speak for themselves.
Jesus said, "When I was hungry you fed me; when I was in prison you visited me; when I was naked you clothed me."
The question was asked from audience, "Lord, when did we see you hungry, in prison or needing clothes." Jesus answered, "When you did it unto the least of these, you did it unto Me."
We must do what we must do for the cause of Christ. If we fail to do so...God help us all!
