It has been said that the eyes are mirrors of the soul. Countless songs, poems, and novels have explored the power
and mysteries the eyes hold. I sometimes try to ascertain the character or emotional state of a person by studying their eyes – noting whether they meet my gaze in a friendly way. Is sorrow or anger lingering there? Do they seem self-conscious
and fearful of returning my glance?
At one time I was intrigued by individuals categorized as “Jesus people.” In their eyes I saw serenity, peace and acceptance.
It seemed that their eyes met mine with confidence and contentment. I often wondered what made them tick. A woman I met through my job at the Welfare Board gave me my answers, without uttering a word. One of my responsibilities was transporting welfare clients to their medical appointments. This woman particular impressed me with her sweetness, friendliness and gratitude.
On a routine workday, I wasn’t paying much attention to our surroundings as we sat in a crowded waiting room for what
seemed an interminable length of time. Bored, I picked up a magazine. It was a cheap scandal sheet— anything to distract me from the day’s monotony. But when I turned to see how my charge was doing, I quickly put it down. She sat, quietly, her eyes raised upward, a serene and beautiful expression on her face. She was obviously praying. It all came together for me when
I realized where we were. The doctor’s waiting room we were in was an oncologist—a cancer specialist. She had cancer, yet her eyes and demeanor told me everything I needed to know about faith and courage. Whe was one of those “Jesus people.” She had found the meaning and purpose of life.
Now years later, I can say with assurance that I, too, live with confidence and joy. Jesus mesmerized millions by the look of love with which he gazed upon them. Millions of lives have been transformed by a look still found in the eyes of those who serve their risen Savior.
I am amazed as I consider how one’s eyes reflect what is in their hear and how a look of love can affect so many others,
possibly changing them forever. And so as I recall a special little lady with whom I spent a short time many years ago, I realize that although I do not know the course of ther life, I know that wherever she is at this moment, she is joyously abiding in our Savior’s love.
A Savior’s Look of Love
My Savior did not perish
His look of love lives on
Within the eyes of those He saves
I see the confidence He gives
The joy and courage of His children
Proves to me that Jesus lives.
