From the Heart: Savoring the Precious Moments
By Rosemary Sinclair
Back when Paul and I dated, fell in love, and married, the lyrics of a popular song seemed to speak directly to us. It became "our song.” With two jobs and a 50 mile commute between us, it was difficult for Paul to find the time or energy for us to be together. So the lyrics that said "Precious and few are the moments we two can share" had a special meaning for us as young lovers and then endured into several years of our marriage when Paul's job required extensive over night travel.
God's love has enabled me to cherish the present moment, not dwell on the past or fear future trials. I am confident and at peace even as we experience the physical challenges that are part of aging. My husband never complains of the discomfort, pain, or frustration stemming from the debilitating Parkinson's disease he was diagnosed with a short time ago.
Even though the disease progressively limits his activities, he continues to maintain our home and remain chivalrous and protective of me. I am always helped in and out of our vehicles. He graciously serves me my breakfast each morning. If I stir during the night or seem uncomfortable, this good man adjusts my pillow and insists on getting up to get me a drink or whatever he thinks might ease my discomfort no matter how much I protest.
There is another lovely song I have heard since my youth, but that now touches my heart in a special way. "And the days dwindle down to a precious few – September, November, and these few precious days I'll spend with you, these golden days I’ll spend with you.” September song as sung by Frank Sinatra.
With the peace Christ has given me I face the future unafraid, knowing what a glorious future awaits me and the man I love. Jesus gives us the courage to endure life’s trials and savor the precious moments that come with loving and being loved.
Recently we experienced a wonderful moment. We had parked, Paul had already helped me out of the care and we were about to enter the restaurant for dinner when we turned to see what was holding up our eight-year-old grandson and his mother. The sight we saw was beautiful. There he was, purposely standing at the back door of the car, ready to help his mother as she prepared to exit from the back seat, just like “Pop Pop” helped “Grammy.”
One more of life’s “Precious Moments”.
Prescious Moments
The Heavenly Father gives
All his children
Moments to enjoy
And for lifes trials
He gives us courage
Through His presence
To employ
No matter what the time or place
He gives us His unfailing grace
And with the glory that awaits us
As we enter Heaven’s gates
The precious moments of this life
Are far more precious to us
