Cover Story: Christian Love
Ron Christian Pastors Christian Love Baptist Church
By Robin S. Nash

SINNERS ARE WELCOME! That’s the sign you see upon approaching Christian Love Baptist Church in Irvington, NJ. Ironically, the name of the church’s pastor is Rev. Ron Christian. It could not have been a more perfect match. Rev. Ron was called to pastor Christian Love in 2001 when there were 12 members and the church was in foreclosure. Five years, 6,000 members and 17 national and international churches later, the art of agape love is the foundation of Ron Christian’s ministry. “The Lord told me this is where I want you to be.”

A Shepherd's Corner: In Celebration of (Black) Men

Community Baptist Church & Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church.

The reasons for the poorer outcomes in African American women are not fully understood, although the disease is frequently not discovered in black women, so they do not get medical attention until it is at a more advanced stage. This doesn’t totally explain the differences, however and new studies find similarities between the clinical presentation and course of the disease in Africans and African Americans, suggesting that genetic factors may play a significant role in the racial difference encountered in America.

FROM THE HEART: To Everything There is a Season
By Rosemary Sinclair

Autumn – my favorite time of year - nature’s palette of gorgeous colors sparkles across golden days that begin with a chill, then ease into warm afternoons, causing homeward bound school children to shed their sweaters and jackets. At night, a harvest moon trails a silky path through ebony skies sprinkled with brightly glittering stars. Summers lazy days evolve into a flurry of activity prompted by a new crispness in the air. It’s as though people feel a vigor that puts a bounce in their steps. I bake, cook and shop with renewed enthusiasm.

My View: OIC Lauded at NJPAC
By Rev. Theresa Nance Pastor of
The Church By The Side Of The Road
108 Hoover Ave., Passaic, NJ.

US. Ambassador Andrew Young strutted on to the stage of the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark and lauded the priceless contributions of the late Dr. Leon Sullivan (19222001), affectionately known for years as the “Lion of Zion.” The great minister was the pastor of the Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Philadelphia, serving as its under shepherd from 1970 to 1988, when he retired and moved to Phoenix, AZ.

THE WAY AHEAD:
By Mwandikaji K. Mwanafunzi

It truly was a night to remember. Ambassador Young recalled the genesis of OIC and acknowledged that Dr. Sullivan was helping urban "brothers" and "sisters" before Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his disciples began their journey seeking justice for people of color and the poor in general. Mr. Young was one of Dr. Kings most trusted advisors.

THE LAST WORD:
By Jean Nash Wells

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. If you have not already had a mammogram, it is imperative that you get one and this month is as good a time to do it as any. I had my yearly mammogram in June and happy to say that there were no abnormalities. I’m taking this time to plead with you to have the test because according to a National Cancer Institute study, African American women are more than twice as likely to die from breast cancer than their white counterparts.
