Cover Story: A Pastor with A Purpose: Rev. Deforest “Buster” Soaries The Language of Respect and a Passion for Progress
By D. Kendall

Standing at a microphone during the recent Language of Respect Coalition’s inaugural Town Meeting at Rutgers University in New Brunswick an exceptionally bright fifth-grade student poured out her heart and her hurt to the crowded room. The little girl cried, struggling to express the painful experience of being called derogatory names. With earnestness, she described her struggle to maintain a healthy self-esteem despite negativity from her peers.

Guest Editorial: Thank You!
By Pastor Manny Niekerk

When the members of Kunjalo Music Ministries left teary-eyed family, children and friends behind on the soil of sunny Cape Town, South Africa on the afternoon of Tuesday, 21 March 2007, nothing prepared us for the experience we would have in the ensuing five weeks in the United States of America.

A Pilgrimage to the Holy Land
By Herb Boyd

Eleven Black Catholics on a pilgrimage to Israel could hardly contain themselves as they stood on a precipice overlooking Jerusalem. Below them, stretching for miles on a seemingly endless panorama, were the landmarks and scenes they had read about in the Bible.

My View: I Ain't Mad at Imus
By Rev. Theresa Nance

This is the month we celebrate mothers. What would you do if someone called your baby girl, (no matter how old that baby is) "a nappy-headed 'ho?"

Obviously, I'm referring to the ridiculous invective that spewed from the very rich mouth of former radio talk show host Don Imus. Well, Imus was removed from both his cable television program and his radio program, but the matter of referring to Black women as the infamous "B" word and other hurtful epithets cannot and should not be placed at the feet of Don Imus alone

From the Heart: The Look of Love
By Rosemary Sinclair

It has been said that the eyes are mirrors of the soul. Countless songs, poems, and novels have explored the power and mysteries the eyes hold. I sometimes try to ascertain the character or emotional state of a person by studying their eyes – noting whether they meet my gaze in a friendly way. Is sorrow or anger lingering there? Do they seem self-conscious
and fearful of returning my glance?

The Way Ahead: PEACE
By Mwandikaji K. Mwanafunzi

The April 2007 Virginia Tech University mass murder soaked up public attention. Many folks asked that same old question: “Why?”

Simply put, the mass murderer, Seung-Hui Cho, was crazy. At a deeper level, however, his actions may also have been demonically driven, evidenced by the seasonal timing—during the period between Resurrection Sunday and Pentecost—and Cho’s comparison of himself to Jesus Christ. The devil attempts to distort God’s word and detour people from God’s will.

Gospel Train: Grace & Peace
By Rev. Monroe

I have to first say Happy Mother’s Day! I salute you for all of the attributes you have obtained through the years in order to nurture us as we develop in the world and in the ways of God. Whatever you had to do to ensure that we would not go astray—thank you (and even if your child went left, you are still a wonderful mother)! For all of your teaching, sacrificing, praying, laboring, and disciplining we are better because of you. So to each generation of great and grand, to all of the foster and adoptive, and to the aunties and big sisters, I honor you and give God glory for you virtuous women who imparted love, knowledge and understanding in us, so that we can do better, want better, and reach for the top—never settling… you are one of the reasons we are here!

The Fitness Doctor: A Special Gift for Mom
Kahlil Carmichael, C.P.T

It’s that time of year again. A time when we pause to honor and celebrate the women who have through their strength, kindness and love have helped, mold and shape us into the people we have become. I know personally, I have been blessed with a wonderful mother and several saintly women from my church who have been like mothers to me, constantly speaking into my life with wisdom, encouragement and support. So, in thinking of what I could give to show my mother how much she means to me I thought about the most important thing she already has-her health.
