Cover Story: In This House on This Morning
By Playthell Benjamin
Although I am not a religious man I am often compelled to defend the church, especially the black church. In this I am much like my intellectual hero Dr. W.E.B. Du Bois. Returning to America after a stint working on a Doctor of Economics degree at the Kaiser Wilhelm University in Germany–then considered the leading university in the world- where by his own estimate he was “educated within an inch of my life”–Dubois was a skeptic about the claims for divine providence. And like Du Bois, who referred to the African Methodist Episcopal Church–the first church founded by Africa’s descendents in the new world–as “one of the most magnificent institutions ever organized by men,”

The Man, His Mission, His Master

President, General Baptist Convention of New Jersey
I remember as a teenager having to drink from water fountains that read, “colored only,” and having no bathroom provided for us in the movie theater where we were forced to sit upstairs while the whites sat downstairs. I heard whites refer to me and others as n------, boy, jigga boo, coon and many other racial slurs. I remember having our door kicked in by the county sheriff, who never admitted that he was at the wrong house.

Savoring the Precious Moments
By Rosemary Sinclair
Back when Paul and I dated, fell in love, and married, the lyrics of a popular song seemed to speak directly to us. It became "our song.” With two jobs and a 50 mile commute between us, it was difficult for Paul to find the time or energy for us to be together. So the lyrics that said "Precious and few are the moments we two can share" had a special meaning for us as young lovers and then endured into several years of our marriage when Paul's job required extensive over night travel.

Speaking out on Iraq: Where is the Black Church?
By Rev. Reginald T. Jackson
By God’s grace we are blessed to see the passing of the year 2006 and the beginning of the year 2007. We have so much to thank God for. Life itself is a blessing, a blessing pregnant with possibilities and opportunities. I pray that this year we will commit our lives more passionately and deliberately to working toward God’s kingdom on earth. "
My View: Black and Proud

In spite of the fact that we celebrate the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., I am of the opinion that also celebrating both the life and legacy of this musical giant would epitomize King's wishes that black folks, like white folks would be judged by the content of their character and not the color of their skin.
The Way Ahead: Bell, Justice and MLK
By Mwandikaji K. Mwanafunzi
By now most of us know that in late November 2006 police officers fired 50 shots at three unarmed black men in Southeast Queens, NY, killing Sean Bell, who was to be married that day. They also wounded two black men who accompanied Bell, as the three left his bachelor party.
Gospel Train: Grace & Peace
By Patricia Baldwin
Welcome to the year of new beginnings, the month of first fruits and the next level of your destiny. God has given us favor to see the introduction of the harvest foundation. What I’m saying is that the covenant we have will root and manifest in an exceeding and abundant quantity that we could never imagine. But wait, continue to run with patience because in due time you will reap if you faint not. When you change paths, count it not as a risk; if you are acknowledging God in all your ways then you are secure. Just have faith and trust him totally.

If you are like a lot of people you have asked yourself, “Can I afford to hire a personal trainer?” My simple answer is you can‘t afford not to. Our communities spend millions on products and services that really do nothing except, camouflage the serious issues that are destroying us internally. We over spend on clothing trying to overcompensate for the reality that we are really not happy with our physical body image.
