Lieutenant Governor David A. Paterson holds
inaugural celebration at Riverside Church
By Robin Nash
The historic Riverside Church in Harlem was filled to capacity on January 5th, 2007 for the inauguration celebration of Lieutenant Governor David A. Paterson. He had officially been sworn in on January 1, but this celebration was for the people of Harlem whom he served in various capacities for many years including the New York State Senate where he was minority leader. The event was open to the public and among the hundreds of well-wishers on hand were the elite of New York politics past and present.
From the Heart:
Always With Me
By Rosemary Sinclair
In September, my 65th birthday brought me to the realization that I am well into the second half of my life. Despite the current cultural emphasis on youth, I feel proud and contented to be who I am and where I am in my life. God has blessed me richly, and I feel as if all my heart’s desires have been granted.

Why Can’t NJ Children Get a Quality Education, Too?
By Rev. Reginald T. Jackson
We are now in February, African American History Month, a time when we will again look back and remember and celebrate the great history of African Americans in this country. But it is my hope that this month will also be an opportunity to learn some valuable lessons that will benefit us as we move forward and make our history. I believe the chapters we write today will be positive or negative dependent on how we treat our children and prepare them for their futures. And so, I again come back to the issue of education. My friend, Dr. Calvin Butts says that ‘“faith and education are the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers of our people.” How right he is.
The Way Ahead: Questions on Ethiopia and Somalia
By Mwandikaji K. Mwanafunzi
To us it looked like a Christmas War, with the irony of soldiers from Ethiopia—whose Christian church predates those of most European countries—initiating military attacks in late December, when Christians we know commemorate the birth of the Prince of Peace. But to Ethiopians it was a Pre-Christmas War, since their Ethiopian Orthodox Church celebrates Christmas in January.

WBGO Exhibit Presents Classic Magazine Covers
By Rev. Theresa Nance
Cephas Bowles, general manager at radio station WBGO-FM, the area’s preeminent Jazz station, said this to me recently: “Tell them it was marvelous, excellent.”He was referring to the fantastic pictorial exhibit that embellished the walls of the WBGO Gallery. Titled, “Jet, Black, Brown and Tan,” it is an exhibit of the beautiful covers of Jet, Ebony, Tan and Sepia magazines. I have used those very superlatives, i.e., marvelous and excellent, to describe the beauty of those covers and the story they tell of a man who dared to publish the positive aspects of his people.
