Cover Story: The Next Level
New York Theological focuses on Urban Leadership Training
By Jean Nash Wells

From its beginnings as the Bible Teachers’ College in Montclair, NJ in 1900, to its incarnation as the New York Theological Seminary in Harlem ( Morningside Heights), the Bible has occupied the central position in the school’s theological curriculum. With the name change to New York Theological Seminary came a new venture with a commitment to biblical understanding and theological training for urban ministry at the heart of its mission.

PAUL ROBESON: LIFETIME SCHOLAR
By Paul Robeson, Jr.

As Paul Robeson walked to the speaker's platform on Commencement Day, June 18, 1919, the audience rose as one to applaud him. They remained standing until he had reached the podium. He was an overwhelmingly popular choice as Valedictorian. For the second year in a row, he had been the top college football player, chosen as a first-team All-America end by all the major selectors.

Ever since “Roots” first aired on television back in 1977, African Americans have been particularly interested in their history. With the advent of the Internet and other technological advances such as DNA, tracing family history has become much easier. But imagine if you could actually hear a far removed ancestor tell their story. StoryCorps Griot makes it possible for you to leave such a gift for your progeny.

My View:
Twenty years of sowing
By Rev. Theresa Nance

Twenty years. Twenty years of suffering, sacrificing and settling in his spirit what God had ordained him to do. That is the partial saga of the Rev. Dr. James A. Kuykendall, founder and pastor of the Agape Christian Ministries Church located in the city of Paterson, NJ.

Back in the day, Dr. Kuykendall and his lovely wife, Elder Kathy Kuykendall, planted where nothing had yet been sown and the harvest they are both enjoying is a testament not only to their faithfulness, but to God's faithfulness as well.

From the Heart:
Come Rain or Come Shine
By Rosemary Sinclair

Spring in the Southeast arrives earlier than springtime in the Northeast. Here in Carolina we are blessed to have beautiful, fragrant camellias that begin blooming in December, so we are never without colorful flowers. Here the windy month is February, rather March as it is in New Jersey where I grew up. March is our rainy month, and when the cold, gray days descend upon us, I know it won’t be long before fragrant jasmine, purple wisteria and white and pink dogwoods blanket the countryside. I look out my front door and thrill at the sight of delicate white dogwood lining the street as far I can see.

A Shepard’s Corner
By Rev. Reginald T. Jackson

This month Christians all around the world celebrate Easter—the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. We believe that the resurrection of Jesus is the most important event in the history of the world. In fact, the Christian faith rises or falls on the fact of the resurrection that Jesus physically got up out of the grave. As the Apostle Paul says in his first letter to the Corinthians, if Christ be not raised from the dead “we of all people are most to be pitied.” Our preaching is vain, our faith is vain; all that we have believed and hoped for is vain.

Gospel Train: Grace & Peace
By Rev. Monroe

I know I usually give you a mini sermon before I go into our topic, but this time I will just say we are on the “L” train – L for legendary. When I say legendary, I’m not talking about an old gospel music great. Think of the trendsetters, generational barrier breakers and go-getters! Legends of whom I write have paved the way, going through back doors so the next generation could go through the front. I speak of the legendary still here today and not going anywhere, still making albums and making grand performances—the icons of quartet music, legends in gospel music, EMI recording artists—The Mighty Clouds of Joy.

The Fitness Doctor
Kahlil Carmichael, C.P.T

God is doing something new. I can feel it in the atmosphere. Something fresh is about to spring up and spring forth! Can you feel it? As we complete the season of Lent or time of repentance, I pray that you have made the most of your season, and examined the areas of your life that continue to hold you back. Have you let go of unforgiveness? How about renouncing bad habits, like smoking, gossiping and, oh yes, let’s not forget the sin of gluttony! I have, and I thank God for His Grace and my life and I eagerly anticipate the new thing that He is doing in my life. For these reasons, this is my favorite time of year.
