About Us
The Positive Community is the only faith-based lifestyle magazine targeted to the African American market in the New York /New Jersey area. As its tagline denotes, the magazine focuses on the “Good News from the Church and the Community.”

First published in August, 1999 as a newsletter, The Positive Community News, had as its charter advertisers The Baptist Minister’s Conference of Greater New York & Vicinity, Carver Federal Savings Bank, Dime Savings Bank, Apel Travel/Alken Tours and Dick Gidron Cadillac and Oldsmobile.

The newsletter evolved into The Positive Community magazine, which has published monthly since September of 2000.

Adrian A. CouncilThe Positive Community was created to fill a void that existed in the media. The dominant media gives little or no attention to the best of what happens in the Black church or community ─ only what appeals to the lowest common denominator makes the general news. It was the vision of founder and publisher, Adrian A. Council that a medium that would reflect the community-building efforts of churches, small businesses, corporations and other institutions, as well as individuals would be able to compete in the marketplace, by giving advertisers a much needed alternative to reach the growing faith community.

Unlike magazines that focus on celebrities, our readers are delighted to see their pastors, neighbors, co-workers, friends, family-members and themselves in a format that is well-designed, colorful and easy-to-read.

Now in its fifth year of publication, The Positive Community continues to grow in ad pages, circulation and influence as a leadership chronicle. In addition to the monthly publication, The Positive Community participates in and co-sponsors church and community events that focus on health and financial literacy related issues.

Jean Nash WellsMr. Council had a more than 20-year career in sales and management at Inner City Broadcasting Corporation (WBLS/WLIB) before partnering with Jean Nash Wells, veteran media executive and CEO of Jean Wells Associates Advertising and Public Relations, to form The Positive Community Corporation.

“The goal for our business is simple and straightforward,” said Adrian Council. “It is to earn, invest and share. Our commitment to our readers is to communicate values, ideas and ideals that promote self-acceptance, self-reliance and self-respect.”

The Positive Community reflects the very best in the communities we serve. We focus on family and the community building efforts ― the good works of churches, businesses, institutions and individuals. It is clear from research and experience that what is seen, heard or read in church has the highest retention. The Positive Community delivers quality and service.
